A defect in Apple AirDrop threatens 1.5 billion users
Security researchers have discovered a security vulnerability that threatens 1.5 billion Apple device users with the risk of their phone numbers and emails being stolen.
The researchers reported that the AirDrop service provided by the company to its users to facilitate the sharing of photos, videos and presentations between its devices, could be exploited by hackers.
A team from Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany explained that hackers can obtain phone numbers and emails of nearby AirDrop users through contacts only, stressing that the “PrivateDrop” service can be used instead of AirDop; So the vulnerability can be controlled.
Through mutual authentication and a Wi-Fi enabled device, private information can be obtained in the device, and although Apple uses encryption when exchanging data, researchers found that it can be easily hacked using simple techniques such as blind force attacks, a type of attack that relies on Encrypted text only.
It is noteworthy that this problem was revealed in 2019, but the company “Apple” did not acknowledge it and did not work to find a solution, and according to the researchers, about 1.5 billion users of “Apple” devices are at risk now.
