iPhone 14 may get 30W fast charging
A new leak suggests that the iPhone 14 lineup may get 30W fast charging, which is a big jump from the 20W rating used in the iPhone 13 lineup.
The rumors are based on reports that an unnamed charger brand is sending 30W iPhone 14 adapters to the media for early access and review. This company believes that Apple will announce 30W charging as a feature for the iPhone 14 series.
This leak doesn’t have links or images associated with it, but it’s not a far-fetched idea. The iPhone 13 Pro Max was able to temporarily support 27W charging in a test, indicating that it can support 30W.
Currently, an iPhone 8 or later connected to an 18W PD USB-C wall adapter charges 50% of its battery in 30 minutes. iPhone 12 and later models support 20W fast charging.
The 30W charger will theoretically cut in a big deal this time around – at the cost of significantly more heat.
Higher wattage translates to faster charging, especially on a smaller battery like the iPhone. However, this also means more heat, less efficiency, and faster battery degradation.
It’s not clear if the 30W charging will be limited to iPhone 14 Pro models or will be available for all iPhone 14 models. Restrictions can also be placed based on battery size, so only “max” models can get the advantage.
Apple recently released two 35W dual USB-C power adapters for use in simultaneously charging MacBook Air and iPhone. These chargers appear to be the rumored 30W charger expected in 2022, but given these latest rumors, Apple may still have another GaN charger in the works.
The iPhone 14 lineup is expected to be announced during Apple’s event on September 7.
